COLUMBIA FALLS - The defending state champion Lady Pirates overcame a few missing athletes to earn a fifth-place finish at the Columbia Falls Invitational meet Saturday while the Pirates battled the same setback plus a few nagging injuries to come in fourth.
Spring break saw a few athletes away from the area this weekend but the Lady Pirates didn't let that slow them down too much on their way to a fifth-place finish.
"I am just glad that we are through our spring break," Polson coach Bob Gunderson said. "It always disrupts our conditioning and once again there were key kids we were missing because of the break."
Breanne Kelley and Claudia Hewston led the way for the Lady Pirates at the meet as Kelley earned a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.75 seconds, was third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.44 seconds and finished sixth in the high jump at a height of 4 feet, 10 inches. Kelley also ran a 1:04 split on her leg of the 1,600-meter relay, where the Lady Pirates finished third. For Kelley, it was her first track meet of 2011.
"She had good times in all of her races," Gunderson said about Kelley's performance. "It was also her first time doing the high jump. We plan to continue with her there because we think she has the potential to end up in the five-foot, two inch to five-foot, four inch range."
Freshman Hewston continued her strong showing in the distance running events, finishing second in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:47.56 while also earning sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:40.97. Hewston was also a part of the 1,600-meter relay team, which finished third.
Sierra Pete made her return to competition for the first time since tearing her ACL during the 2010 Divisional Basketball Tournament. Pete tore the reconstructed ACL again in August but made a very strong showing in the 400-meter dash Saturday, finishing second with a time of 1:07.14. Pete also ran on the 1,600-meter relay team.
"It is a miracle that she can do what she is doing after undergoing those two surgeries," Gunderson said. "Her time in the 400 was an extremely good mark, considering her circumstances."
Elsewhere at the meet Saturday, the 400-meter realy team of Alicia Sitz, Kat Medland, Kenzie Banner and Jewel Zakit-Ackerman came in fifth with a time of 55.40 seconds, the 1,600-meter relay team of Katie Finley, Pete, Hewston and Kelley earned third with a time of 4:33.04. D.J. Conko Camel was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 29 feet, two inches, Shelby Korpi tied for fourth in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 11 and one half inch and Katie Finley was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 11 inches.
While the Lady Pirates may look as if they have had a slow start to the 2011 season, Gunderson said the program is still right on track.
“Overall, we need to put a little more emphasis on conditioning in practice,” he said. “We have been trying to avoid over-use injuries and we have brought the kids along a little slower than usual this spring. We are just going to have to ‘train through’ a couple of meets to get to where we need to be.”
On the boy’s side of things, the Pirates also had a few athletes missing and battled a few injuries to earn their fourth-place finish Saturday.
A majority of the Pirates’ points came from the pole vault event, where Polson dominated the competition with second, third, fifth and sixth-place finishes.
Zion Lee led the way for Polson in the event with a second-place finish after clearing a height of 12 feet. Brock Bleazard also cleared a height of 12 feet to come in third, Drew Fouty was fifth as he cleared 11 feet, six inches and Jessie Alfiero was sixth as he cleared 11 feet.
“The pole vault crew came through with some good efforts and several personal records,” Gunderson said. “Zion and Brock were very close to clearing 12 feet, six inches.”
Polson picked up some more points in other field events as Clark Rubel finished third in the shot put with a toss of 45 feet, six inches, Dale Big Sam was fourth in the event with a toss of 43 feet, five and one half inch and Riley Sampson was third in the discus with a toss of 122 feet, 11 inches.
“Our weight crew garnered some important points in their events,” Gunderson said. “They are consistent to this point with their marks in the shot put and discus and are one of the strengths of our team.”
On the track, Chris Cote earned a second-place finish in the 400-meter run with a time of 54.93 seconds, Mike Devlin was third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.53 seconds and Lee finished sixth in his first-ever 110-meter hurdle race with a time of 18.02 seconds.
The Pirate 400-meter relay team came in fourth with a time of 46.50 second and the 1,600-meter relay squad was third with a time of 3:41.19.
As with the Lady Pirates, Gunderson says the boys just need a little workout time to get to where they need to be.
“We just need to put more emphasis on our conditioning if he want to get to where we want to be in May,” he said.
Both teams will be back in action Tuesday at the Flathead High School Class A Invite in Kalispell. The event begins at 1 p.m.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will also be in action Saturday at the Missoula County Public Schools Invite at Big Sky High School. That event begins at 9:30 a.m.
