COLUMBIA FALLS - The Ronan/St. Ignatius track squads made a strong showing Saturday as the Chiefs finished third and the Maidens fourth at the Columbia Falls Invitational.
For many RSI athletes, it was their first time competing at the varsity level as many young Chiefs and Maidens were placed in the junior varsity ranks at the first meet of the season.
Two weeks after finishing last at their first meet of the season in Corvallis, the Chiefs looked like a team on a mission Saturday as they compiled 63 points to finish behind only Corvallis (91) and host Columbia Falls (100).
According to coach Crystal Pitts, the chance to compete with the top athletes in the area was a great boost for her young team.
"At Columbia Falls, everything went by performance. The top six finishes counted and varsity and the next six were JV," she said. "That helped us, because all of a sudden my kids realized they could compete at the varsity level."
Jordan Franklin made it look easy as he led the Chiefs with four first-place finishes, coming in at the top spot in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.79 seconds, the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.03 seconds and the high jump as he cleared six feet, two inches. Franklin was also a member of the Chiefs' 400-meter relay team, which earned first at the meet.
The Chiefs had a fast day on the track Saturday, earning three first-place finishes, a second, a third, a fourth and three sixth-place awards.
Along with Franklin's pair of individual top finishes on the track, the 400-meter relay team of Erik Malmquist, Marcus Hungerford, Jalen Bell and Franklin finished in the top spot with a time of 45.94 seconds.
Malmquist came in second in the 200-meter dash for the Chiefs with a time of 24.50 seconds and was also sixth in the 100-meter dash at 12.09 seconds. Hungerford was third in the 400-meter run with a time of 55.25 seconds, the 1,600-meter relay team of Malmquist, Hungerford, Franklin and Dustin Goldsby was fourth with a time of 3:44.75, Alex Alimadadi was sixth in the 400-meter run at 56.75 seconds and Paden Alexander was sixth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:59.2.
Besides Franklin's top finish in the high jump, the Chiefs' only other field points came from Bell, who finished fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, one and three-fourths inches.
The Maidens also made an improvement from their fifth-place finish in Corvallis two weeks ago as they came in fourth at Columbia Falls Saturday.
A trio of top finishes by Adessa Durglo helped propel the Maidens to the strong finish as Durglo was first in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, five and a half inches and first in the triple jump with a distance of 34 feet, six inches and first in the high jump after clearing a height of five feet.
The Maidens had a good day on the track as Jade Grey came away with a third place finish in the 3,200-meter run and a sixth-place time in the 1,600-meter event. Courtney Clairmont was fourth in the 1,600-meter run, Maura Soukup was fourth in the 400-meter run and the 400-meter relay team was sixth with a time of 56.21 seconds.
Twyla Hogge came in fourth in the shot put for the Maidens with a throw of 29 feet, two and one-half inches.
The strong showings for both the Chiefs and Maidens came with depleted squads as several kids were not available to compete because of ACT testing and prior commitments at other events.
“I expect to see continual improvement from these kids. We had a bunch of kids missing this week at a bunch of other events,” Pitts said. “Even with 12 kids out, we did pretty well. Once we get a full team together, who knows what we will do.”
