ST. IGNATIUS — The Lady Bulldogs were put to the test physically and mentally at the Bigfork Flight Tournament in Bigfork, playing a total of four 10-game pro-sets in one day.
Sarah Bowers went 3-1 defeating Bigfork (10-6), Libby (10-6) and Troy (10-2). Jane Makepeace also went 3-1 after taking down Libby (10-3), Troy (10-3) and Cutbank players (10-1).
“At Bigfork, Sarah and Jane did really well,” said head girls tennis coach Sara Ison. “What impressed me most was that it was a very long day and Sarah dug deep and found the will to win.” Ison said Bowers found herself down 0-5 against a tough Libby opponent but pulled it together in the end to win 10-6.
“She was exhausted but for her to be down 0-5 and to fight back shows a lot about her,” Ison added.
She also mentioned the play of Briar Ahlborn who went 3-1 at Bigfork and also defeated her opponent in Eureka and Ronan. The synchronized play of Cecelia Koskela and Cierra Dougherty has also caught the attention of their coach.
“I’m very pleased with that matchup (Koskela and Dougherty). They complement each other,” Ison said.
With just three more weeks until Divisional in Troy, Ison said team practices will become longer to prepare for a strong finish.
The Lady Bulldogs next matchup is at Superior on Tuesday, Loyola at home Thursday and Friday in Darby.
“The Bulldog boys didn’t get to play many days this week, but the tournament on Saturday in Bigfork was a long day of tennis,” said boys’ head coach Kimimi Ashley.
Karl Daniels was fourth at the tournament with two wins and two losses. Teammate Felix Sonntag took third, going 2-2, and Troy Bontrager was fifth at 0-4. The duo of Katz Yelsa and Harry Suta had a good weekend, coming back with a first-place finish at 2-1.
“Katz and Harry are so calm on the court, yet both are competitve and want to do better each time they practice and play,” Ashley said. “If they keep using and soaking in what they are practicing, they will make a good standing at State play and be able to contribute very important points to the team overall.”
