Editor,

There has been a lot of negative things said about The People’s Voice on Facebook. This letter is in response to those comments.

The first person who started collecting signatures for the rest of the Salazar money was Opal Cajune. She has gone to the creator’s home now. A group of Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes members took up the cause that Opal began, seeking justice for all CSKT members, including those who would discredit Opal’s cause.

One statement: “Maybe The People’s Voice, instead of hitting up tribal elderly with $5 donation requests to pay for lawyers, should foot the bill for this pointless fiasco.”

The People’s Voice gathered more than 1,400 signatures and sent out a letter to all who signed requesting donations to the cause —only if able — would be appreciated. When certain individuals make negative comments about the People’s Voice they are addressing 1,400 signatures, including many elders. Elder-slamming is irrational, narrow, hateful, destructive and extremely counter-productive.

Another statement: “Well I have to say ... As for hitting up our tribal elderly for lawyer fees, it would be my guess that a number of elders signed the petition ...”

A reply: “Too late, I’m on the fight ... Seems totally pointless to me and those people (The “People’s Voice”) will be the first ones to cry around about how much this fiasco will cost to implement.”

Other crass comments complained about local newspapers running or not running certain letters.

The Valley Journal is a very good source of information and is free to writers.
