Editor,
I read the response from People’s Voice in regard to negative comments being made about their activities. They made an incorrect statement about my late mother, Opal Cajune. My mother did not start any petition activity. What she did do involved advising tribal members to read and understand their tribal constitution so they would know the proper way to conduct a petition. My mother always supported political activism. She spent a good amount of time advising and informing members of a People’s Voice to ensure their actions would be conducted within the parameters of the tribal constitution.
There have been many opinions given on this issue. Everyone is entitled to having their opinion and should feel encouraged to voice it in a civil and intelligent manner. In fact, the Tribal Council conducted meetings requesting tribal members to share their opinions. It is disconcerting to observe how people are vilified for having and expressing an opinion. I hope that we can all rise above such behavior when confronted with others who have different ideas and opinions. I believe my mother shared this wish for civil discourse.
