Editor,

I have known Rick Schoening personally his whole life, and known in detail all of his professional experience. Why should Rick be your next Sheriff?

Let me begin by letting you know why I, current Whitefish Chief of Police, am qualified to answer that question. I have been in law enforcement for 34 years; 22 with the Illinois State Police, and have served as the Chief of Police in Whitefish for more than 12 years.

Rick is a person of great integrity and possesses personality traits that lend themselves to being a successful and effective law enforcement professional. He is a problem solver, taking the initiative to be proactive in doing so. He is a very effective, easily understood communicator who knows how to build consensus among those in the work environment and will utilize these skills and traits to effectively perform the duties and responsibilities as Sheriff, serving the citizens of Lake County very well.

As a game warden with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks for 28 years, Rick’s duties and his solid work ethic paralleled those of a successful professional law enforcement officer. Personally and professionally, Rick has always been respected by his peers and the community as being fair, logical, and when needed, empathetic.

Rick is the type of person and law enforcement officer for which I have tremendous respect. I would like to have him with me if I had to serve a search warrant on a drug house at 3 a.m., conduct a class at an elementary school, or do a death notification. Rick is that diverse in his abilities. The commitment and dedication he demonstrated throughout his tenure as game warden was exemplary. If you asked him a question, he either knew the answer or would quickly get it for you. He would get the job done, as he has that type of dedication, commitment and knowledge in his profession.

Rick possesses one thing that cannot be taught or legislated: common sense. I highly recommend you elect Rick Schoening to be your next Lake County Sheriff.
