I am running for House District 93 as the true conservative republican alternative to Dan Salomon. A recent article in the Lake County Leader quoted Mr. Salomon as promising to support and re-introduce the proposed CSKT Compact as written to the 2015 legislature if he is elected. Unfortunately, by stating his clear intention to do so, Mr. Salomon has demonstrated that he has not listened to nor is he interested in representing his constituents. Many of them are irrigators and have expressed grave concerns about the compact and have proposed a reasonable means of reaching a better agreement.
There are a large number of people who have not been well represented in the discussions leading to the proposed CSKT Compact. I am talking of irrigators who oppose the Compact and of the three irrigation districts represented by the Flathead Joint Board of Control, who favor Compact discussions that include the recognition of property rights and water claims. There are also the benefits from the millions of dollars the government is offering for the acceptance of the Compact to the tribe. There are about 360,000 off-reservation Montanans who will be impacted by this compact. Mr. Salomon is not listening to their representatives about the overall effect this Compact will have on them.
The Republican Party platform is strongly in favor of protecting individual property rights and maintaining constitutional protections for Montana citizens. The support of this compact is in direct opposition to those two statewide elements of the platform.
I am running for House District 93 Representative. As the Representative for HD93, I will represent everyone in House District 93, not just a handful of people. Irrigators, property owners, Tribal members, towns, businesses, and individuals of every age range will have their voice heard in Helena. I will work tirelessly to ensure that any Compact considered by the legislature in 2015 will represent a fair and equitable settlement between the people of the state and the Tribes claiming federal reserved water rights.
