Editor,

We are lucky in Montana to have the chance to meet our national candidates face to face in small group settings. But as I found out recently some candidates are more interested in our concerns than others. I attended the recent luncheon on May 17 held for Representative Steve Daines at the Polson VFW. To my surprise, our Congressman took no questions from the audience. Does he care what his constituents in Lake County have on their minds? Apparently not. During his speech, Congressman Daines boasted of pushing the green button twice the previous week and voting yes to create a House select committee to look into Benghazi one more time and voting yes to hold a past IRS staffer in contempt of Congress after a year of fruitless investigations. This he proudly stated was the highlight of his week. Gotcha politics? And although I agree that it was the right thing to do, I would have been more interested in hearing his reasons why he voted twice to raise the nation’s debt ceiling last year.

I also had the opportunity over Memorial Day weekend to hear Senator John Walsh speak at the Kalispell VFW. Unlike the controlled Daines’ meeting, Walsh took open questions from the audience. Apparently he cares what his constituents think. After listening to both our representatives, my impression is that John Walsh does care about what middle class working Montanans think, whereas Steve Daines does not. Who gets Steve Daines’ ear? If not Montanans, could it be the corporate interests?
