Dismayed at apparent lack of interest

Editor,
Considering the preponderance of individual, States and media opposition we’ve seen in recent months, I was dismayed at the absence of turnout for the May 28 forum on Common Core, which was held at the Polson High School auditorium. Probably fewer than 30 folks attended (my guess without a headcount) and most were people I recognized from area schools (teachers, trustees). There was one reporter from a local paper, however, nothing has appeared in that paper regarding the forum.
As a confessed conservative who has neither hopped on the ‘agin’ bandwagon nor given an endorsement to Common Core, I remain interested in hearing all sides of the issue. This forum was informative and the County Superintendent of Schools, Michelle Wood, did a fine job of convening a panel of involved administrators and teachers from Lake County as well as a well-informed representative from OPI in Helena. The imparted information and answers to audience questions, heavily weighted toward impact on local control of the education process, were most informative and deserved to be heard by all concerned parents and taxpayers.
Based on my personal experiences of late, I can only conclude that our citizens either (1) don’t care one way or the other, or (2) have already made up their minds and are not interested in hearing anything that may not agree with their positions.
