Editor,

Regarding your article on departmental dysfunction on June 11: The Valley Journal reporter, Ms. Strickland, did an excellent job on reporting this article regarding Ronan Police Department and the serious problems; and not only the police department procedures, but with the Mayor and City Council. Ronan Mayor Kim Aipperspach and the city council members have no idea on the operations of law enforcement. They make up their own rules and regulations by side stepping the law enforcement code, regulations, and requirements. The City of Ronan is possibly going to see more lawsuits filed against them if they don’t change their ways. This is not the first incident where Ronan PD had a citizen (not a police officer or reserve) ride along with a police unit carrying a gun and handcuffs and involved in making illegal arrests. I suggest that Montana State Department of Justice and Montana POST come up and look into Ronan’s Police Department procedures and make some serious changes to come in complete alignment with law enforcement procedures, regulations and requirements before a police officer and/or citizen gets killed or seriously hurt due to incompetence and negligence. I truly agree that the City of Ronan has acted in serious disregard for the need to train, supervise, and discipline their law enforcement officers. I am 72 years old and have been in law enforcement for more than 45 years and I have never seen a police department in such need of help.
