The tribal membership needs to start paying attention and use their voting power in the county courts. We need unbiased, unprejudiced judges, prosecutors, etc., if our tribal members are ever going to have a chance in a system that routinely gives tribal memberships a sentence five times greater than non-tribal.
Our Tribal court has the power to handle most cases but refuses to. If our lives are ever going to change for the better the membership needs to realize they have the constitutional power, not the council. The recall amendment is a constitutional right, protection of our tribal government and constitution. There shouldn’t be opposition to what strengthens and protect our government. We need to weed out the impostors. We need a council that is concerned with the needs of their members. The only time elders, children (under 18) and the poor are of concern is during elections.
Consider the budget for 891 elders compared to a language school that serves only a few students, or other budgets. The Hellgate Treaty guarantees there will always be money for health care. Nation-wide chronic pain sufferers are punished for being inferior. Our IHS care is working at eliminating all medicines or doctors that help chronic pain. How many members are waiting for surgeries, for quality of life?
There are two petitions circulating: 1 – for the councils to rescind all resolutions made pertaining to Salazar settlement and give the money to the membership. 2 – asking for full disclosure of the (untouchable ) 1985 recapture account. In September 2015 this account is supposed to be $78 million awaiting for the membership to decide on what we want to do, also to bring forth full disclosure of the tribes’ ability to instigate and continue necessary obligation to bring the Kerr Dam recapture to a constitutional vote.
Now tribal members get out and vote or the recall. We are the power that makes us a tribe.
