Editor,

This letter is in response to Patrick A. Pierre’s letter in the Char-Koosta dated June 26, 2014. Pierre’s letter wants the membership to vote no in the upcoming Secretarial Election to Amend Article IV of the Tribal Constitution. This amendment will give our tribe the right to recall a councilperson for “wrong doing.” Pierre seems to think 10 to 15 people (The People’s Voice, Inc.) can destroy our tribal governing body. Really.

First of all, you cannot recall any councilmember for the lame excuse of not liking a member of our council. There are strict procedures that must be followed for a recall. Mismanagement of Tribal lands, resources, and funds all come to mind. Certainly not liking a councilman has no merit at all.

Secondly, The People’s Voice Inc. put forth the petition for a vote, nothing else. The membership could either sign or not sign the petition as they saw fit. More than 1,400 tribal members voted to sign the petition, letting the council know they want a voice in our government on all important issues facing our tribe today and in the future.

So, to the membership, remember to get out and vote on July 12. Voting “Yes” for the Recall Amendment would I hope start a more open and better government for us all. Holding councilmembers to a higher level of truth, fullness, and standards is, as I see it, a plus for everyone. A “No” vote leaves all the power to just a few.
