SKC graduates leaders, lifelong learners

PABLO — The 2011 graduates of Salish Kootenai College received their degrees and words of wisdom from several speakers Saturday, June 11. They were congratulated and told to be lifelong learners and leaders.
“Your degree or certificate from SKC is only the beginning of your success,” Ernest “Bud” Moran, Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribal council chairman, said.
SKC President Dr. Luana Ross and Amy Stiffarm, SKC student senate president, echoed Moran’s message.
“Education is transformative and restorative,” Ross said. “You are now equipped to become better citizens and leaders."
“You came to SKC for a reason and you are now leaving with a purpose. You are setting standards for future SKC graduates like me,” Stiffarm, a junior, told the graduating class.
For graduate Erin Gilham of Browning, her two sons were the reasons she obtained a higher education.
"It feels good to have my hard work pay off because I did it for my sons," Gilham said. "I wanted them to be proud of me, now I just need a job to keep working to provide opportunities for them to succeed as well."
Gilham graduated with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She hopes to stay in the Polson area and teach. Gilham has not found a job yet but is checking the Office of Public instruction website daily for openings.
She credited SKC's tight knit community to her success.
"The biggest challenge I faced was being a single mother and full-time student was that finding childcare and housing," Gilham said. "The great support the college faculty and staff give each and every student was the best thing about SKC."
Dr. Joseph McDonald, president emeritus of SKC, who gave the commencement address, said, “You started something and you finished. A lot of people start college and never finish. You have a good base now.”
