News from the Dayton Days organizing committee
DAYTON — In celebration of Dayton Daze this year, and while shooting the January page for their fundraising calendar, the Chief Cliff Volunteer Fire Department held a costume party in July at the Proctor Community Center. In previous years, Dayton Daze has been sponsored by the Idle Spur Saloon, but the Spur’s closure last fall necessitated a new approach this year. As a result, volunteers from the fire department and members of the community have pitched in to create the must-attend of the summer—a 1920’s costume party, with activities all day long.
On Saturday, Sept. 6, the 23rd annual Dayton Daze celebration will begin at 10 a.m. at the Dayton Park with a whole host of exciting events, including an open car show, police dog exhibition, free sailboat rides, ladies bazaar and luncheon, free wine-tasting, parade, live music, barbecue, craft booths, games for kids, silent auction, 50/50 and a rifle raffle for two Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22’s.
The theme for this year’s event is Gangsters, Molls and the Roaring Twenties. While not everyone may have a pinstripe suit or fringed dress hanging in the back of their closet, just about everyone has clothes that might have been worn while working on the farm, making moonshine in the woods, traveling to church in a Model T, or otherwise living life as a Montanan back in the 1920s. You don’t have to be dressed like Jay Gatsby or Daisy Buchanan to attend this year’s affair. Just dig out the old family albums and root through those trunks in the attic, or head down to the local thrift shop and look for something you can transform into a period costume by adding suspenders and a hat, or a little lace and a sparkly headband. A quick Google search for vintage photos should give you all the ideas and inspiration you’ll need to come up with one humdinger of a costume for this sockdollager of the summer.
