Letter to the Salish and Kootenai Tribal Council

Editor, I write this in deepest concerns of the tribes’ council in just simple words without any opinions from anyone in the community. This is just an opinion / question type message. Our tribal members are suffering and no one’s doing anything about it. And many years have passed since distribution of $10,000 a piece came and gone. We haven’t nothing since other than the covid money. Our tribes are supposedly among the richest tribes. $400 three times a year does not buy anything but pocket change to some. We the people should be due sometime in the near future – might bring comfort for a change.  Thank you with highest regards and respect. Harold Pa...

In March, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized the nation’s most stringent tailpipe emissions rules to date – a move that has been met with much pushback. To comply with these mandates from the EPA, two-thirds of all new vehicles will need to be electric by 2032. The impacts of thi...

View from the Library

We have had such a beautiful fall and now we are ready for the holiday season. This is the last month for our fall drink specials in the Joyful Cup – the pumpkin spice lattes are delicious, so be sure to get yours before they’re gone for the year. The winter menu is coming. You can stop into the ...

Poem for unity, peace

Editor, This letter was inspired by the very controversial and divisive political news coverage lately. I do firmly believe that as we humans navigate, manage, and live out our political divides, we need some inner peace. Our thinking totally affects each of our lives moment by moment. Read, consider, and...

Slices of Life

The girl (or boy, as the case may be) couldn’t remember exactly when, but life became weary. It was a gradual development - so gradual she didn’t even notice the tears slipping from her eyes at first. But because of it, life became nebulous, and more difficult to navigate. The sun - once brigh...

Support bipartisan solutions for climate change

Editor, In the decades after World War II, it came as a shock when Roger Revelle, at that time the director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, warned that the surface of the ocean was becoming increasingly acidic and unable to absorb the rapidly growing carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fu...

By now, most of us have learned of the shocking recordings of Tim Sheehy at Montana campaign events talking about “bonding with all the Indians while they’re drunk at 8 a.m.,” and having “Coors Light cans flying by your head” while riding in the Crow parade.  Mr. Sheehy,...

Vote Shelly Fyant for HD 91

Editor, Shelly Fyant is running for HD 91 - a large district covering parts of Missoula, Arlee, Dixon, Camas Prairie, Charlo and Ronan. Google HD 91 (Montana).  She is very capable of representing all her constituents in these areas due to her diverse background. Shelly was raised on a ranch in Arlee...

Peace Voice

“I love working the polls!” a friend told me recently. “It strengthens my trust in the whole process. And it’s fun getting to help eligible voters flex their civic muscles.” I think about my friend’s experience as I hear stories about mistrust in our elections.  ...

Vote for family values

Editor, “Democracy cannot flourish amid fear. Liberty cannot bloom amid hate. Justice cannot take root amid rage. America must get to work.” (Thurgood Marshall) Here we are again ... in a fragile state as a nation. Worried sick, I always return to my values, instilled by my solid Republican...
