News from Senate Democratic Caucus

MONTANA — After a hiatus following the conclusion of the legislative session, we are pleased to announce the return of the Montana Senate Democrats Monthly Newsletter. Every month, we will bring you updates on the hard work Montana’s Democratic senators are doing every day to fight for working families, protect our freedoms, and make Montana a better place for all to live, work, and raise their families in.

This month, we want to put a special focus on a horrible crisis unfolding in our state. In the midst of the government shutdown, the Trump Administration decided to withhold SNAP food assistance benefits from families across the country. Here in Montana, 77,000 of our neighbors rely on SNAP to feed themselves and their kids. Senate Democrats called on Governor Gianforte to use state funds to make sure those 77,000 Montanans get the help they need to put food on their tables. This can be done very easily through the use of reserve funds designated to backfill federal shortfalls like this. Governor Gianforte refused to take action.

While a federal court recently ordered the Trump Administration to begin paying out full SNAP benefits today, the Trump Administration has appealed that ruling and sought a stay. Even if the ruling stands, it is unknown how quickly this much needed aid will reach Montana families.

We are keeping up the fight and we are encouraged and humbled by the outpouring of support from everyday Montanans in every corner of this state who have stood up to help their communities by volunteering, donating food and money to their food banks, and other forms of service and advocacy.
