POLSON — “The Marvelous Diversity of Life” by Dr. Barry Flamm will be Mission Mountain Audubon’s evening program on Thursday, June 9 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the North Lake County Library in Polson. Everyone is welcome.

Dr. Flamm will describe what biodiversity is and why we should care about it. He will also discuss the threats to the world’s biodiversity including habitat loss, degradation, population growth, widespread poverty, poor management, short-sighted policies, political corruption, and climate change.

Dr. Flamm recently visited the chain of 7,107 Pacific islands known as the Philippines. This fascinating archipelago is rich in terrestrial and marine biodiversity; however, it is threatened by unsustainable land-use practices and climate change. Dr. Flamm will draw upon his extensive experience from around the world to address the challenges that the Filipino people face — as well as the rest of us — in preserving their biologically diverse heritage.

Dr. Flamm is currently a Natural Resource and Environmental Consultant who provides advice and assistance on natural resource policy, organic agriculture, wild land and park planning and management, biodiversity conservation, and environmental assessments that apply ecological solutions to unsustainable problems. And over the course of his long career, Dr. Flamm taught at the universities of Montana and Maryland and worked for the Forest Service, the Department of Agriculture, and the Wilderness Society. He was also a conservation consultant in China and Nepal and served as a Senior Staff Member on the President’s Council on Environmental Quality for former President Carter.
