Oppose Daines’ proposal to eliminate WSAs

Editor, Senator John Tester is in support of the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act (BCSA), as are many Montanans and Missoulians. This bill is intended to expand protections to the headwaters of the Blackfoot and Clearwater Rivers, while improving and expanding outdoor recreation areas for the public. The BCSA has already given Senator Steve Daines what he says he prioritizes; jobs and investment in Montana. According to a Missoula Current article, 153 union jobs and 57 million dollars have been given to the local economy through Southwest Crown of the Continent Collaborative, an integral part of the BCSA. The final part of the BCSA, which the Senate is considering now, intends to add...

Corporate tax rates opposed out of greed

Editor, Several recent letters have questioned Greg Hertz’s guest column concerning corporate tax laws. Simply put, corporate taxes are taxes that the federal government imposes on profits made by corporations. In 2017, under then President Trump, the corporate rate dropped from 35% to 21%. Since...

Annual Town Pump Food Bank challenge underway

Editor, This year’s Town Pump Food Bank Challenge campaign is “Montanans Helping Montanans for 20 Years.” It started on Sept. 1 and runs through Nov. 30. In 2002 the campaign started with 17 food bank partners in 15 communities and a Town Pump match of $50,000. This year they are working...

Vote for Laura Dever for Ward 2 City Commissioner

Editor, I am writing this letter to urge the residents of Ward 2 of the Polson community to elect Laura Dever for a full term as city commissioner. As an interim commissioner, Laura has shown that she is willing to learn and work with various stakeholders to be an effective commissioner. She has dedicated...

Choices can either be made in fear or love

Editor, Our nation dearly needs this: “A bringing of light to the darkness.”  These words were spoken by Arthur Brooks, an economist and an influential conservative voice in this world. He was on an App interview entitled: “How Can We Break Our Addiction to Contempt?” It wa...

Money doesn’t trickle down, stays at top

Editor, Recently Montana state senator Greg Hertz, (R), SD6, wrote his opposition to raising taxes on corporations. He argued that corporate tax costs ultimately get passed on to workers and consumers, i.e. if corporations pay higher taxes they will pay their employees less and charge customers more. D...

Privacy, money at risk as IRS seeks approval to snoop

Editor, There is an ongoing battle regarding the $3.5 trillion reconciliation plan proposed by the Biden Administration, which includes a provision that would require financial institutions, such as our credit unions, to report to the IRS transactional data for any account with at least $600 of inflows or...

Valley Views for Oct. 13, 2021

Pregnancies and human life are older than recorded time, and so, it follows, are abortions. The procedures by which abortions have been conducted, however, have only very recently in human history been recognized in law and made safe by regulations. In 1973, the Roe v Wade decision declared abortion a con...

2017 tax law adds to deficit, doesn’t grow economy

Editor, Regarding Greg Hertz’s Oct. 6 editorial, Greg, I see you’re back to writing editorials about the “progressive left” and their tax proposals. You find a source to quote that supports your opinion and then tout the benefit of the 2017 Tax Law that President Trump signed and t...

Voting is a marvelous right

Editor, “We the People,” in our democracy have a wonderful power. We need not be swayed by the loud, raucous and relentless voices of discord and political pandering to which we are exposed. “We the People,” over the years, have demonstrated our power in this democracy. The next...
