Tax cuts benefit wealthiest Montanans

Editor, Montana State Republican Senator Greg Hertz sponsored Senate Bill 159 which was passed and signed into law. It cut the top state income tax from 6.9 percent to 6.75 percent until 2024. This tax cut will primarily benefit the highest income earners in Montana. Over 80 percent of the cuts will go to the wealthiest 20 percent of Montanans. Senator Hertz also sponsored Senate Bill 399, which was passed and signed into law. It goes into effect in 2024 as SB 159 phases out. It further cuts taxes for the wealthiest Montanans and eliminates dozens of tax credits. These tax bills will cost the state $60 million in lost revenues. Remember this when you next vote. Praise for chiropractic care

Editor, Dr. Ferril is a chiropractor currently running her office in the town of St. Ignatius. She is currently seeing patients on Mondays and Fridays. Many years ago, I suffered an unbearably painful and serious back injury. I could barely move without horrifying pain, even while lying in my bed. Seve...

Equal voice needed across country

Editor,  Democracy in Montana has been strong ever since the development of our new constitution in the 1970s. After the days when the Copper Barons were able to buy elections, Montanans were ready for a change.  With careful reflection, people from across the state gathered to draw up a docu...

Energy deal explained

Editor, The City of Whitefish has come out with a municipal resolution to endorse a carbon-pricing plan, called the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. Now why would they do that? Legislators create unconstitutional bills

Editor, The 67th Montana Legislative Assembly has been over for six weeks and we continue to hear about the aftereffects of this session. Our legislators took an oath to uphold and defend both the federal and state constitutions yet numerous bills enacted this session are clearly unconstitutional. Know...

Volunteers welcomed as employment challenges continue

Editor,  I know there are challenges with finding employees in the local community at this time, but there are also many people who are retired or have free time and are not looking for a job.  Maybe they would like something to do for a few hours each week, even taking a four-hour shift can be ...

Thanks given for Polson’s beautification

Editor,  Many thanks to all you good stewards who gave time and energy picking up the accumulation of trash along our roadsides this spring. Also, the bulb outs on Polson’s Main Street, the garden spots in Ducharme Park, and the downtown hanging flower baskets are the best they have looked i...

Voting restrictions need change

Editor,  There has been enough written, much of it in the national press, about Montana’s new restrictions on voting. These laws have been taken to court and will be decided there. Meanwhile, we might reflect on how critical the right to vote is to our democracy and our lives. Our form of go...

Filibuster is more like a ‘filibluster’

Editor, “Majority rule” is such a simple understandable message. There must have been convoluted arguments in attempting to create a “supermajority” dividing line. First, there is the problem of defending why there should even be a “supermajority.” Next comes the gar...
