News from Ninepipes Museum of Early Montana

CHARLO – Polson artists Heather and Matt Holmes will be featured at the Ninepipes Museum of Early Montana on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to the “First Saturday” event to enjoy their horsehair pottery, hand-sculpted raku fish, and multi-media totems.

In 2012, the couple was named “Treasured Montana Artists” by Secretary of State Linda McCulloch. The talented and busy artists share their love of art with daughters Matison, 10, and Macy, 7, who accompany their parents to art shows and have been successful in selling some of their own pieces.

The Holmes draw their inspiration from Montana’s rivers and from the color and detail of artwork made by Northwest coastal tribes. Heather says the family makes it a point to get out every weekend to enjoy the water: rafting the rivers, doing some whitewater rafting, or flyfishing with the girls, hence the connection to the fish they create with their raku-fired ceramics.

We “love doing something and being able to put that love into our art,” Heather said, “and it’s a real bonus when you’re able to sell that art.”

As educators, the Holmes are able to share their passion with local youth; Matt has been teaching art at Polson High School for 17 years, and Heather teaches art principles and fundamentals at the “Little Friends Preschool,” offered by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Heather is a director of the Sandpiper Art Gallery in Polson where their artwork is on display, and where she teaches children’s workshops. The museum and gift shop are open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through Nov. 1. Please call (406) 644-3435 for more information.
