News from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Lake County

POLSON — The Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service will take place on Tuesday, April 1. The goal is to highlight the impact of AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and other national service programs in tackling local problems and managing volunteers for greater impact, and to thank national service members for their commitment.

National Community Services was enacted by Congress in 1993.  They are claiming April 1 as the National Mayors Day of Service.

On the state level, it is the governor’s office that is asking for it to be organized on the local level, which we will be doing here in Polson at the North Lake County Public Library from 10 - 11 a.m. with an introduction by Duane Lutke, the Executive Director of the Area VI Agency on Aging who sponsors the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Foster Grandparents Program.

Next, we will have a welcome from John Campbell on behalf of the Polson City Commission, then our new Polson Mayor Heather Knutson will read the proclamation. In conjunction with today’s events Bonnie Manicke will be dedicating a plaque that lists all previous mayors on it. The event will conclude with a photo shoot and cake and coffee being served by local volunteers.

Last year this event took place in Ronan, and Mayor Kim Aipperspach presided. This year Aipperspach will again endorse the Mayors National Day of Service. In addition, we are excited to share an opportunity for Knutson to recognize the important contributions of national and community service in our county. As someone who knows the impact of national and community service first-hand, we are thrilled to have her sign on.
