An open fire and piping hot roasted pork warmed those who gathered to be merry under the falling crimson and golden leaves of Bockman Park on Saturday.

The Ronan Park Board sponsored its second annual Pig in the Park fundraiser, which drew a large crowd that anxiously kept an eye on two pigs in anticipation of the winner of Pig Pie Bingo. Musician Halliday Quist played tunes while people waited.

The vision for the future of the park was on display, as people viewed tiny models of culturally relevant play equipment that have slides built into an eagle’s back and swings that are a bird’s perch. The innovative playground will consist of “pods” that are groups of playground equipment with interactive signage in Salish, Kootenai, and English. The design of the pods will propel park-goers deeper into the park to the next group of play equipment. Funds from the fundraiser will benefit the play pods.

Youngsters Gerald Meyers and Roper Wayman could hardly wait for the playground to be built.

“That’s monkey bars? It’s going to be the best,” Gerald Meyers said.

Parent Lori Atwood was also a fan of the pods.

“It think they are pretty awesome. I like that they can teach the kids, and they can touch them and it will talk to them,” Atwood said.

Parent Anthony Meyers was also impressed.

“I think it is really cool,” Anthony Meyers said. “I like the idea of the cultural and spiritual aspect of it. I think it is pretty neat.”
