POLSON — Eight schools from around western Montana brought roughly 120 speech, debate and drama students to Polson for the Piratepalooza Speech Meet on Oct. 25.
Debate and drama events were held at Polson High School while speech contestants competed at Polson Middle School.
Instead of starting speaking rounds every hour and a half, the meet allowed two hours between rounds, according to PHS Head Speech Coach Jon Petersen.
“The idea was to allow judges more time to write thoughtful comments to the competitors and reduce the frenetic nature of the meet,” Petersen said.
PHS placers were:
1st Place, Serious Oral Interpretation, Jordan Broussard
3rd Place, Memorized Public Address, Haley Kendley
5th Place, Original Oratory, Ghanima des Lions
6th Place, Serious Oral Interpretation, Kania Smith
Team results were:
Class A Speech: 1st—Columbia Falls, 2nd—Whitefish, 3rd—Polson
Class B Speech: 1st—Loyola, 2nd—Bigfork, 3rd—Ronan
Class A Drama: 1st—Libby, 2nd—Frenchtown
Class B Drama: 1st—Bigfork
“I really want to thank the dozens of volunteers who participated as judges—they did a great job, and they made this a very successful meet,” Petersen said.
Polson has eight meets remaining in the season, with its next meet on Nov. 1 at the Kalispell Classic, which will held at Glacier High School and Flathead High School.
