RONAN – Roads to post-graduate career opportunities are diverse, K. William Harvey third and fourth grade boys learned last week.

The school hosted its second career fair for youngsters, with 18 male presenters from different walks of life letting students know the ins and outs of what they do every day.

“They talked to the kids about their jobs, their education,” Counselor and event organizer Tammy Young said. “The kids are coming with questions like ‘What do you do with your paycheck?’ Hopefully they will explain that that’s how they pay bills.”

Firefighters, lawyers, superintendents, teachers, nurses, natural resource managers, and law enforcement were on hand to tell the kids what they do and how they got into their careers. Students were screened and sorted for careers they might be interested in prior to the fair.

“Do you like your job?” fourth grader Lucas Clark asked EMT and nurse John Dresen.

Dresen explained to Lucas that his did enjoy his work. He also thought career day was worthwhile.

“I like to invest in kids,” Dresen said. “I’ve got four kids of my own and it’s important to spend time with them.”

Dean of Students Carey Swanberg appreciated all of the presenters.

“We have amazing community people who will drop what they have going on and give us three hours,” Swanberg said. “That’s great.”

Young said K. William Harvey third and fourth grade girls will get the chance to experience career day in the spring.

“I like separating them and giving them a gender-specific role model,” Young said. “Hopefully it will get them to want to graduate and give them options. Some of these kids don’t have a clue of what options are out there. Hopefully it will give them a taste of what is out there and give them some goals to work toward.”
