Eighteen local Little Guy Wrestlers march into state with championships

HAMILTON — Eighteen local wrestlers earned championships at the Little Guy Inter-Valley Wrestling Tournament in Hamilton Saturday.
Ronan did most of their damage in the younger divisions of the tournament, collecting six of their seven championship in the beginning and novice divisions. The Chiefs ensured a bright future for years to come by winning four of the 15 classes in the beginning division. Randy Finley (65B), Justin Mays (85), Brandon Moran (95) and Kesean Burke (130) took top honors in the beginning division for Ronan.
Noah Cheff, a 60-pound novice Ronan wrestler, and Gus Bosley, a 124-pound novice Chief wrestler, both won championships. Happy Cheff (85) and Graydon Irish (110) made it to the novice championship, but had to settle for silver.
Chief 189-pound junior wrestler Ronnie Cleland was the only Ronan wrestler to win gold in the older divisions. Ronnie Cullis made it to the 152-pound junior championship, but lost to Dillon’s Troy Scott. Austin Hakes ran into a tough Bulldog wrestler, losing to Mission-Charlo’s Ryce Hedwood in the 140-pound junior championship.
The Pirates had five champions at the 14-team tournament. Hunter Fritsch defeated Florence’s Ramsey Meinzen to win the 140-pound novice championship. Fritsch’s teammate Jonah Burke defeated Ronan’s Vincent Webster in the consolation match to finish third in the 140-pound novice class. Polson’s Robbie Cordis-Robinson had no competition in the 190-pound novice class. Jaron Morgan, a Pirate 70-pound novice wrestler, finished in second. Anthony Camel (158) also earned silver in the novice division for Polson.
Cadis Chowning was the only Pirate middle division champion, finishing in first in the 75-pound class. The junior division was where the Pirates flexed their muscles. Polson had three junior champions and two-runner ups. Taylor Martin (105), Drew Carruth (112) and Devon Morris (135) all won their weight class and Carlos Quinones (100) and Chris Giebar (160) earned silver.
While the Chiefs dominated the younger classes, Mission-Charlo was a force in the older division, winning five of their six championships in the middle and junior divisions.
Zane Hafliger, a 158-pound, novice Bulldog wrestler, was the only Bulldog wrestler to win a championship in the two younger divisions. Trent Dennison made it to the 95-pound, beginner championship, but finished in second place.
The Bulldogs had six wrestlers in a championship match in the middle division. Jamie Mullins (90), Steven Bravo (120) and Emilo Bravo (160) all won their championship and Dante McDougal (95), Bridger Smith (100) and Bridger Coffman (110) finished in second.
Hedwood and Jacen Petersen (145) won championships in the junior division. Morgan Schultz finished in second in the 85-pound class.
Six Warriors made it to the championship match, but were unable to win their final match. Colt Crawford finished in second place in his 60-pound, beginner class. In the middle class, Michael Pablo (65), P.J. Haynes (120), Alex Bertolt (130) and Calvin Hendren (187) all earned silver. Logan Potts finished runner-up in the 215-pound, junior class.
All beginners that placed in Hamilton qualified for the state championship in Columbia Falls Friday. The top eight wrestlers in the novice and middle divisions earned a spot in Columbia Falls Saturday. All juniors automatically qualified for the tournament.
