RAVALLI — A 46-year-old Missoula woman was killed in a crash on her motorcycle early Sunday afternoon on U.S. Highway 93 just south of Ravalli.

The wreck happened around 12:45 p.m. when a wheel popped off of a single axle trailer being pulled behind a northbound Ford Explorer, Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Shad Andersen said. The wheel rolled into oncoming traffic and struck a Volvo sport utility vehicle heading south, causing the vehicle to slide sideways into the other lane. A northbound Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with the passenger side of the Volvo.

The motorcycle driver, identified as Robin Dawn Howell-Hintz, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a helmet, Andersen said.

The driver of the Volvo, a college student from Missoula, was taken to St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, where she was treated and released on Monday, Andersen said. Both she and the driver of the Ford Explorer, a Eureka man, were wearing their seatbelts.

Weather conditions were sunny, and the road was dry, Andersen noted. As of Monday, no citations had been issued, and the wreck was still under investigation. Andersen said alcohol did not appear to be a factor.

“I’m trying to determine what exactly happened,” Andersen said.

The Volvo driver’s dog was missing after the accident, and Andersen said anyone with information about the dog should call the Lake County Sheriff’s Office (883-7301) or Tribal Law and Order (675-3512). The dog is a female Rottweiler/Setter mix, black with brown spots, and is “very shy.” She goes by “Stella Luna” and was wearing a blue collar decorated with moons and stars.

Andersen said he would like to thank all the emergency personnel who responded to the crash, including the Arlee Volunteer Fire Department, Arlee Ambulance, Mission Valley Ambulance, Tribal Law and Order, Tribal Fish and Game, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and MHP troopers based in Missoula.
