RONAN — The large lighted Santas, bells and wreaths went up on Ronan’s Main Street and U.S. Highway 93 through town on Nov. 23. Under cloudy skies and with gusty winds that made Santa dance, Ronan Telephone Company crew Shawn Barber, Jeremy Holm and James English attached the large ornaments to light poles.
“The Prestons do (the decorations) every year,” Barber said, keeping his eye on the cherry picker with Holm in it.
The holiday decorations go up around Thanksgiving each year and have since the 60s. The tradition began with Jay W. Preston Sr. soon after the Preston family bought RTC in 1960.
The original holiday figures were purchased used from another city, but Jay Sr. upgraded, buying a new life-sized ornament or two every year.
“We want them up for the Christmas season,” said Jay Wilson Preston Jr., CEO of Ronan Telephone Company.
