PABLO — Kids attending the Pablo Elementary School After School Program wrote poems about the beauty of Montana, and they’ve gotten what all authors want —publication.
About 30 children in the kindergarten through 4th grade program penned a poem in early October, and Francy Moll, after school program director, entered them in a contest held by the Dramatic Pen.
Although none of the poems won, the editor liked them so much they are all being published in a book called, “Into the Beautiful,” Moll said.
Although a month or two is a long time for grade school kids to remember specific activities, many of the poets could recall their work.
Mikenzie Morigeau wrote about bison.
“They stick up for each other,” she said.
Bobcats were the subject of Molly Spotted Eagle’s poem.
“They are strong and violent, and they run and jump,” she said.
Aliyah DeRoche chose a bear, and Annie Hall picked horses, telling of their beauty in her poetry.
Moll figured out a way all the different ages of kids could write a poem. Some wrote acrostic poems with Montana as their base, some described the Treasure State on an outline map of Montana, but all the odes were about Montana and its natural loveliness.
“Now I’m going to be working so that all the kids can have a copy of the book,” Moll said, already thinking about fundraising ideas.
Moll is working on a display of the kids’ original work at Pablo Elementary.
