News from Polson schools

POLSON — The Sealants for Smiles program came to Linderman School in Polson this week, with 271 students receiving a dental screening. Most of those screened also had fluoride and sealant applications. Sealants for Smiles is a statewide school oral health improvement program that started in Montana in 2012. It is a project of the Montana Healthy Smiles Initiative, sponsored by members of the Montana Dental Association.

Local dentists, hygienists, and assistants volunteered their time and expertise in doing the screening and applying the fluoride and sealants. Each student received a new toothbrush and toothpaste, and took a report home to their parents. Those needing urgent dental care will be contacted by the coordinator of the program.

“It was fun to watch everyone working together in improving the oral health of our students,” said school nurse Millie Nesladek, R.N. “Tooth decay, though almost entirely preventable, is the single most chronic childhood disease. The Sealants for Smiles is a good way to identify problems and take steps in initiating care for students who are referred.”
