POLSON — Sixth, seventh and eighth grade academic bowl teams from Charlo, Polson, Ronan and St. Ignatius gathered for a “mixer” tournament at Polson Middle School on Dec. 17.
Instead of competing with classmates, students were mixed with competitors from other schools to learn the academic bowl ropes in a practice day.
With coaches reading the questions, the students pushed their individual button if they knew the answer. The first buzzer got to answer the question after the team brainstormed and chose the answer cooperatively.
“It’s where they get to know each other,” Pam Oberwegner, PMS math teacher and academic bowl coach said.
Ronan coach Jeff Kelch said the kids were excited to come. They practice at lunch once a week.

After Christmas, individual schools will take turns hosting an academic bowl with points accumulating until the final bowl, when the winning school is announced.
