News from St. Luke Community Healthcare

Seven graduating seniors are the beneficiaries of $3,500 in scholarships from St. Luke Community Healthcare of Ronan. Five of the recipients are graduates of Arlee, Charlo, Polson, Ronan and St. Ignatius High Schools. A sixth will receive his degree from the Mission Valley Christian Academy in Polson while the seventh and final scholarship winner will graduate from a Florida high school.
Cole Rice is the Arlee High School graduate receiving a Rosemary Miller Memorial Scholarship from St. Luke. The 18-year-old outstanding wrestler is the son of Clint and Jamie Rice. An AAU Grand Nationals Champion in both Greco and Freestyle wrestling in 2010, Cole hopes to continue wrestling while attending college where he will pursue studies in the radiology field.
The Charlo High School graduating senior receiving a $500 St. Luke Scholarship is Royelle Esterby. This 18-year-old National Honor Society member is the daughter of Richard and RaeCille Esterby. This year’s senior class president and Academic All-State volleyball and basketball player plans to attend Montana State University in Bozeman, where she eventually plans to go into the business or medical field.
The Polson High School Rosemary Miller Memorial Scholarship winner is Sean Hart, the 18-year-old daughter of Dr. Sharla and George Hart. The 2011 Polson Soccer team captain and MVP plans to attend Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash., where he will be majoring in biology. Having recently finished his scuba-diving certification, Sean says that he would eventually like to go on to graduate school to study marine biology because he “would love to be able to learn more about ocean life and the way organisms and eco-systems work.”
Another $500 winner of a St. Luke scholarship is Gordon North Piegan III of Ronan. The 18-year-old son of Wendy Blackweasel competed four years in football at Ronan High School where he was named First Team All-Conference as a tackle. Citing his mom, a nurse at St. Luke, as a role model, Gordon plans to attend the University of Montana and major in pre-med. He says, “Hopefully one day I can become a doctor and be able to save lives and make lives better each day.”
Sierra Scott is the Mission High School graduate who will benefit from a 2011 Rosemary Miller Memorial Scholarship. She is the 18-year-old daughter of Callie Simons and Ken Scott. Sierra says that since she has always had an affinity for working with children, whether in the classroom or on the sporting field, that she is extremely motivated to become a kindergarten teacher. She has been accepted at the University of Montana where, in addition to working toward a teaching degree, she also plans to minor in coaching with a goal of coaching high school volleyball. Sierra explains, “I want to teach and coach in a small rural Montana community similar to the one in which I grew up.”
This year, for the first time, one of the St. Luke Scholarship winners is a graduate of the Mission Valley Christian Academy. He is Robbie Davis, the 18-year-old son of Robert and Abigail Davis. The valedictorian of his graduating class, Robbie’s objective is to attend college and to major in computer engineering. He says that he’s choosing the field “because this generation is moving toward computers more and more and will need people who know what they are doing to make the computer, to fix them, and how to run them.”
Another first for the Rosemary Miller Memorial Scholarship is the fact that an out-of-state recipient has been named from Sarasota, Fla. He is Alex Greenfield, the 18-year-old son of Dr. Dwynn and Aimee Greenfield of St. Ignatius. Alex is looking to attend an Art and Design College to pursue what he calls his “greatest passion” which is art. The award winning budding artist has won “Best of Show” at the Ronan Art Show and the Lake County Fair. He won first, second and third place in photography at the Lincoln County Fair in 2008 and picked up the first place prize for photography at the Florida State Fair.
Shane Roberts, CEO at St. Luke Community Healthcare, says, “We’re proud of all seven recipients of the Rosemary Miller Memorial Scholarship. It’s a real pleasure to be able to give back to the community helping young people reach goals that they have set for themselves.”
Each year, St. Luke Community Healthcare offers seven scholarships of $500 each. Students from each of the six high schools in Lake County and from Hot Springs are encouraged to submit scholarship applications.
