LAKE COUNTY — The market beef project officially began on Jan. 10. 4-H members from across Lake County participated in the steer weigh-in to register their project animal in preparation for the Lake County Fair.
As part of the 4-H market beef project, a weigh-in is held the second Saturday in January designating the start of the project requirements. Typically 4-H members acquire their calf before November as weanlings and begin caring for and training them for the show and market some 250 days later at the county fair in late July. Each member is expected to follow strict guidelines on animal husbandry including proper nutrition, housing, animal health and humane handling. In addition to completing educational manuals and production records, a mandatory quality assurance program must be attended to re-enforce the application of scientifically sound techniques in livestock care and maintenance.
4-H youth development allows members age 9-19 to select a vast variety of educational projects to increase their knowledge and develop life skills such as leadership, community service, responsibility, decision making and community involvement. Administered through the Montana State University Lake County Extension Office in Ronan, the program welcomes all youth and adults to participate.
