News from PHS Speech, Debate and Drama

Seven students represented Polson High School at the Montana Class A Speech, Debate, and Drama Meet Jan. 30-31 at Columbia Falls High School.

Jordan Broussard earned a 6th place medal in Serious Oral Interpretation of Literature. Kenyon Cairns narrowly missed winning a medal, finishing tied for 9th place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Ghanima des Lions and Kania Smith also made it to the semi-final round in their respective events, Original Oratory and Serious Oral Interpretation of Literature.

“We had a very small team this year, but we have a strong core of kids that we can build on for next season,” said Jon Petersen, PHS head coach.

“I want to thank my assistant coaches, Abby Connolly and Ann Harrie, for all of the time and hard work that they put in during the season,” Petersen said. “We do this because it is such a great activity for the kids—it is certainly worth the sacrifice when we see the growth and confidence that they display in their public speaking skills.”

Columbia Falls High School was a runaway winner in Class A Speech, while Corvallis High School was the state champion in Class A Drama.

Class A Speech team totals were:

1st – Columbia Falls

2nd – Belgrade

3rd – Hamilton

4th – Whitefish

5th – Stevensville

Class A Drama team totals:

1st – Corvallis

2nd – Stevensville
