POLSON — Wine, chocolate and your sweetie — what more do you need on Valentine’s Day?

Only paints and a canvas, if you were one of the lucky couples who started celebrating Valentine’s Day at the Mission Valley Aquatic Center.

Artists Julie Christopher and Heather Holmes led the couples through the process of painting two canvases — one a bottle of wine pouring the ruby fluid into a wine glass on the other canvas.

“We supply the wine, the paint, everything,” Holmes said, sweeping her hand around the room where 10 couples concentrated on their art, occasionally sipping a glass of wine or beer, or nibbling on a brownie.

The two women have been holding classes since the fall of 2014 and have had good attendance, but Valentine’s Day was their first couples class.

Shelley Smith had attended a couple of Christopher’s and Holmes’ classes before, and this time she talked husband Lyle into attending the Valentine’s Day painting class with her.

Everyone was humble about their artistic abilities but with Christopher’s and Holmes’ coaching, their paintings were progressing well.

Christopher likes “watching how cool (the paintings) turn out.”

“No one has ever left crying,” she said, smiling.

“I’m not an artist, I’m a dental hygenist,” Kristy Jore said, but she and her husband were enjoying the class.

Kim Thomas and Ken Gray brought a “selfie stick” along — a cellphone monopod that works like an extended arm — to take “selfies” and record the day.

“It’s really fun. It’s bringing out the artist,” Thomas said.

Holmes said classes are held every second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 6 to 8 p.m. at MVAC. The cost is $35, with all supplies provided. To reserve a spot, call (406) 885-2560,  because the classes fill quickly.
