Polson Middle School students raise money for Haiti aid

POLSON — Nanook of the north hats, stocking hats, baseball caps, cowboy hats, gardening hats — all sorts of hats were bobbing down the Polson Middle School halls on Thursday, Jan. 28.
It’s unusual for hats to be worn at PMS because it’s against the rules. But the PMS Student Council thought up the idea as a fundraiser for Haiti and called it Hats for Haiti.
PMS Student Council Treasurer Joe Mullen said student council members manned a table before school to collect a dollar from each student or staff person who wanted to contribute. Their dollar got them a Hats for Haiti sticker and the privilege to wear a hat all day. Some staffers chose to donate a dollar and not to wear a hat.
PMS Student Council Advisor Melissa Bahr said the students got together on Jan. 20 and decided to ask for permission from the administration to hold the fundraiser.
The grand total raised was $252 Bahr said, and the money will go to the Red Cross.
Other PMS students also worked and ate to raise money for Haiti. Eighth grade students baked and “brought in the goods” for a two-day school-wide bake sale, according to PMS Social Studies teacher Mandy Ramesar. The bakesale netted $564 for relief efforts for Haiti.
The PMS Student Council is also collecting toiletries and school supplies for Haiti and other disasters. Donations can be dropped off at the PMS office.
