The Kuilix chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution handed out scholarships to three recipients from around the valley on Saturday.

“We are a non-political group promoting our country, and education is part of the DAR’s mission,” said Bonnie Huber, regent of the Kuilix chapter. “We are passionate about helping our young people get the best education or vocation they can so that they can participate as good citizens of this country.”

Kendra Starkel, 18, from Ronan, won first place. She received a $250 scholarship. She plans to study biomedical engineering when she graduates. Madison Foust, 17, from Charlo, received $100 with second place. She hopes to go into nursing. Shayna Nagy, 18, of Charlo, received $50 for third place, and she wants to study biology and veterinary medicine.

“We hope to make the scholarship bigger in the future,” Huber said. “It comes from our membership fees and fundraisers. The winner at this level goes on to the state level and then to the national level where they can win more scholarships.”

School administrators recommended students with high grade-point averages for the scholarship. The students also needed to be involved in school activities or involved in their communities. The essay contest helped narrow down the candidates.

“We had Kim Christopher, Fred Gariepy and Judy Woolley judge the essays,” Huber said.

Kendra’s first place essay was about preserving heritage.

“Each generation has the responsibility of protecting our liberties and doing what is right for our country,” Kendra wrote.
