RONAN — A Calgary, Alberta man remained behind bars in Lake County on Monday after a routine drug stop last week ended in one of the largest drug seizures in the county in recent memory.
Miguel Douglas Miranda, 22, was being held on $1 million bond, after being pulled over by a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper during a routine traffic stop near St. Ignatius on June 4.
According to Lake County Sheriff Don Bell the trooper noticed the driver acting nervous and called for a drug dog. The canine indicated drugs may be in the vehicle. A search warrant was obtained and nearly 100 pounds of cocaine was located in a secret compartment of the full-sized pickup truck.
“That’s a lot of cocaine,” Bell said. “That’s the biggest I’ve been involved with.”
The cocaine is estimated to be worth more than $1.4 million. Federal officials seized the evidence. Miranda was charged with one count of felony possession of dangerous drugs with intent to sell.
The Montana Highway Patrol, Northwestern Drug Task Force, and Lake County Sheriff’s Department worked the case.
