WHITEFISH — It wasn't the kind of return from the Christmas break the Ronan Chiefs wanted as they lost badly in Whitefish last Saturday.

The Chiefs fell behind quickly 17-4 in the first quarter and had to try to scramble the rest of the night. But the Bulldogs didn't let them get very far, making another 18-8 run in the third before coasting to the 59-39 win.

"I thought we'd give 'em a game. (But) the first quarter buried us again. Geez," Ronan head coach Steve Woll said. "We fought back and in the second we made a run ... but then they blow it right back open again in the third."

Justin Dusty Bull scored 14 points for Ronan and had four steals, three assists and four rebounds.

"Justin has been gone with a death in the family over the break, but, shoot, he had a nice game. Lucus (Black) was gone to a football game, too, but he played well," Woll said. Black had two points and six boards.

Jerod Tanner also had 11 points and five steals, along with two assists.

But the Chiefs struggled from the floor, hitting just two of 13 three-point attempts and making just six of 18 free throws.

"Ooof," Woll said of his team's free throw shooting. "We had a lot of 'oh-fers,'" meaning a lot of missed front ends of one-and-one opportunities.

But he was happy with his team's rebounding.

"Every team is bigger than we are. Our kids played hard. We're just not recognizing things and anticipating well. We don't have a real set leader to count on ... we have people stepping up, but we don't have that one leader," Woll said. "But, we don't have any time to lick our wounds."

On Tuesday Ronan hosted Polson and on Saturday the Chiefs will travel to Libby.

"We were pretty flat on the offensive end ... Hopefully, people will step up and get our rotation going. We have to look at the big picture and get better every day," Woll concluded.
