Petersen leads Bulldogs at Mission Mountain Classic
ST. IGNATIUS — Mission-Charlo’s 145-pounder Jame Petersen held the banner for the Bulldogs at their tournament Saturday.
Petersen pinned all four of his opponents at the Mission Mountain Classic and was the only Bulldog to win a championship at the 11-team tournament.
After pinning Arlee’s Leif Rova, Noxon’s Clay Smith and his Frenchtown opponent in the semifinals, Petersen claimed his third championship of season with a second-period pin of Deer Lodge’s Bobby Ray.
“Jame had a great tournament. Obviously, any time you get a pin against Bobby Ray it’s nice to see,” Mission-Charlo coach Lyle Cronk said.
Ray, who finished second at state last year, is Petersen’s toughest opponent in the Western B-C Division. Cronk said that Ray tries to use his strength to manhandle his opponents and this aggressive style, “plays right into Jame’s strength.”
Scotty Gilleard (125) and Dakota Matt (145) joined Petersen in the championship match but couldn’t come away with a title. Gilleard was pinned by Superior’s Mason Chatterley in the championship round and Matt lost a 17-2 technical fall to Darby’s Dalton Roundy.
Cronk said that both Gilleard and Matt had big wins against their Darby opponents in the semifinals.
Gilleard beat Tiger Caleb Caicedo 8-0 in the semifinals. Caciedo went on to pin Arlee’s Logan Lefler in the consolation match.
“He (Gilleard) wrestled really well in that match, which is important for Scotty. Hopefully, he’ll gain some confidence from it,” Cronk said.
Matt defeated Tiger Michael Majors 13-7 to earn a spot in the championship. Even though Matt lost by technical fall in the finals, Cronk said it was important that he didn’t get pinned and was able to wrestle off his back.
Bulldog heavyweight Nick Dinnell recovered from his first loss of the season, by pinning Thompson Falls’ Robby White at 1:22 to finish in third place. In the semifinals, the Mission senior lost a 3-0 decision to Frenchtown’s Devante Wilson. Cronk said Wilson, who went on to win the championship, was the toughest opponent Dinnell has faced this season.
“It’s important for us to get those matches and learn from them. We didn’t think he was going to go undefeated the whole season,” Cronk said.
Casey Nitschke finished fourth in the 119-pound class. Nitschke, who had pinned his last six opponents entering the tournament, lost a 17-7 major decision to Deer Lodge’s Dustin Morigeau in the consolation match.
