POLSON — The Polson won a pin-fest last Saturday night over valley-rival Ronan, edging the Chiefs 46-39 in a hard-fought wrestling dual.

But it didn't start out all that well for the Pirates.

The dual started at 130 pounds and Ronan wrestlers rattled off six straight match wins, five of them by pin.

"They had a pretty good draw to start at 130 and they really got rolling. It was a train wreck for a while ... I couldn't wait for Brock (Picard's) match to stop the bleeding," Polson head coach Bob Owen said.

Picard won the 171-pound match by pin over Tyler Wheeler to stop Ronan's run. Though the Chiefs' Toby Cheff won the 189 match by pin, Polson rebounded by winning the next seven matches, four by pin, one by technical fall and two by forfeit.

"The best match for us was probably little Pat Sumner at 98. That pin (at 1:13 over Ronan's Lukas Conklin) really helped," coach Owen noted. "Drew Fouty also had a big pin at 125 (in 3:01 against Kyle Lawson). Those two really stepped up to the plate."

Polson won five matches by pin, plus the major decision. Just as critical in the win was filling out the roster to win at 105 and 119 by forfeit.

"That's the biggest thing ... Ronan couldn't get a full lineup and I've been through that ... it's not fun," Owen said.

Polson's junior varsity squad also had a good tournament at Saturday's Mission Mountain Classic in St. Ignatius. Nate Brooks finished second at 130 pounds and 160-pounder Jose Quinnones earned third place.

The Pirates will have a busy week, hosting a dual against Libby on Thursday night in Linderman Gym, then competing in Ronan's Western Montana Duals on Friday and Saturday.

"We're hoping to enter two teams (in Ronan) ... We'd get a lot of experience," coach Owen added.
