COLUMBIA FALLS – The Polson Pirate wrestling team showed up with a vengeance Saturday at the Northwestern A Divisional Tournament in Columbia Falls. Polson sent 17 wrestlers to the meet, and 14 advanced to the Class A State meet in Billings this weekend. Pirate head coach Bob Owen was pleased with his team’s effort midway through the day-long meet.

“We’re wrestling hard and doing pretty well,” Owen said. “We pushed eight into the finals, and I’m happy with that.”

Polson’s strong performance earned the Pirates first place at the meet, finishing with 200 points. Libby took second with 187 points, while Frenchtown finished close behind with 185.5. Meet host Columbia Falls fell behind with 182, and Whitefish finished last with 33 points.

Polson grapplers who earned Divisional titles were Taylor Martin (105), Craig Feistner (125), Alex Nystrom (140), Mike Devlin (152) and heavyweight Josiah Clairmont.

Drew Fouty upset Columbia Falls rival Josiah Osborne for the first time in the 130-pound category, a welcome surprise for Owen. Martin, 105 pounds, won the Jug Beck Quick Pin Award, with three pins in 3:10.

“Josiah has beat him two or three times,” Owen said. “It was a nice surprise.”

In the championship finals, Martin (105) got the ball rolling when he pinned Dylan Roby of Libby in only 43 seconds. In the following match, Carlos Quinones (112) fell to Frenchtown’s Glenn Hensley by pin in 5:36.

In the 119-pound category, Dylan Moll fell to Libby’s Zach Crace by pin in 3:57, while Feistner (125) pinned Cody Lemmons of Frenchtown in 2:24.

Fouty fell to Mitch Haugen of Libby by technical fall, losing 18-2. Senior leader Nystrom secured a divisional title in the 140-pound category by pinning Garret Chapel in 1:30, while Devlin, 152 pounds, beat Joshua Bowers of Libby by a 6-0 decision.

In the heavyweight class, Clairmont pinned Wolf Zinke in 35 seconds.

Alex Helgeson (98), Lucas Polk (112), Skylar Anderson (135), Tel Motichka (145), Jared Young (152) and Marlin Burke (189) also advanced to State.

Those who qualified for State will travel to Billings, where first-round matches are slated to begin at 10 a.m. Feb. 10.
