RONAN — Hunter education online classes are available to anyone 18 or older at the Fish Wildlife and Parks website http://fwp.mt.gov/education/hunter/. There is a fee to take the class online but the mandatory field day is free of charge.

The field day will be held Aug. 15 in Ronan from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mission Valley Shooting Range, 48341 Leighton Rd. To attend the field day students must complete the online class, register online for the field day then present their certificate of successful completion of the online course at check-in.

Hunter education in-classroom instruction is being planned in the Ronan area near the end of August and one in Polson around the first of October, with specific dates to be announced.

These classes are open to everyone 11 years and older to be certified. Families are encouraged to take the class with the students. Many people that do not intend to hunt also take the class to learn firearm safety. The class teaches how firearms work, how to handle them safely, how to load, unload, shoot, transport, clean and other preventive measures. Students will shoot rifles at the shooting range using different types of rifles and sights.

The goal of hunter education is to educate and prevent hunting and firearm accidents, as well as teach hunting ethics.
