DIXON – Yes, the Dixon Center is still open and ready for business. We certainly appreciate its air-conditioned comfort during these hot summer days. I feel relieved that we don ‘t have humidity along with the heat.

I recently returned from an 11-state trip in an elderly motor home back from Maryland to Montana ... and I believe, “There’s no place like home.” The trip was great, seeing lots of interesting people and different scenery (mostly cornfields and peonies from Ohio through most of South Dakota). Getting stranded in a rest area in Indiana over Memorial Day weekend was the low point. Though even AAA couldn’t find us help, I found a renewal of my faith in people with generous, helpful strangers along the way.

I got to see the Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. Remember the movie from the 1980’s, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind?” It was from a longer distance than I had expected, and I cut the top off in all my pictures, but awe-inspiring anyway. I also toured the Battle of the Little Big Horn in Southeast Montana, formerly known as “Custer’s Last Stand.” The weather was just fine, as I had planned the trip to miss the heat/humidity along the route. Now I’m happy to be home for the rest of the summer ... between Missoula and Polson, that is.

Harley and Joey Hettick returned from a cruise along the Inside Passage in Southeast Alaska. Harley was heard to say he would like to live there if he were younger. It really is a beautiful trip, even if you live in scenic Northwest Montana. There are different sea animals and bigger glaciers.  The Hetticks are busy now with the Dixon Melon harvest. If you’ve never eaten a Dixon melon, you must try one. Several types of melons are available. They are now in the local stores and some farmers markets.

We are serving meals at noon on Thursdays and at 6 p.m. every Monday. They are still only $4 and take-outs are available.
