RONAN — At age 10, Kurt McPherson started his own cattle business.

That’s when the Ronan youngster changed his neighbor’s irrigation pipe and was paid a heifer calf for his effort. The following year he earned a bred heifer by helping his mom with herd work. Seven years later, the teenager bought 20 cows.

Now McPherson and his family raise cattle, market hay and cereal grains, and own and operate McPherson Scales, a certified livestock shipping and marketing point.

McPherson was honored as the Agricultural Producer of the Year on Friday evening at the Ronan Chamber of Commerce annual Ronan Agriculture Appreciation Banquet.

McPherson was recognized for using sustainable environmental practices such as protecting habitat for wildlife and utilizing weed control, pasture rotation and shelter belts. He was also congratulated for his innovative marketing strategies and skills in genetics and herd management.

Today McPherson and his wife Stacy are raising three sons. The oldest is currently serving in the armed forces, and the two younger boys are following in their father’s footsteps as they earn their own herd of cows they same way their dad did in the 1980s.

The free steak dinner honored all farming and ranching families in Ronan, and is made possible by Ronan Chamber of Commerce, business sponsors and community donations.
