Polson

Two road games didn’t slow down the Polson Lady Pirates as they beat both Bigfork and Whitefish last weekend. On Sept. 17, they played the Bigfork Vals. The Vals scored the first goal with a direct kick from the 25-yard line, but Tiara Duford, with an assist from Ashlee Howell, evened up the score about 10 seconds later, according to Michael Hewston, head coach of the Lady Pirates soccer team.

“It truly was possession soccer,” he said.

Polson had 22 shots on goal, while Bigfork had seven.

Duford had the magic foot, scoring all three goals.

Hewston was pleased with the Lady Polson’s defense and the girls’ ability to move the ball left and right.

The 3-1 win was too costly, Hewston said, because Amber Clark, a midfield player, ended up with a concussion and will be on the injured list until she’s cleared for play.

On Saturday, Sept. 19, the Lady Pirates took on the Lady Bulldogs in Whitefish, playing under lights for Bulldogs homecoming.

Despite the homecoming electricity, the Lady Pirates prevailed.

“Hannah Hobbs played out of her mind; she was all over everything in the middle,” Hewston said.

He also had praise for Olivia Hewston and Brenna Clark, who were able to all but stop the state’s leading scorer by holding her to one goal.

“I believe this was the first time Polson has won at their house,” Hewston said.

Duford scored her second hat trick in two games, with Ashlee Howell assisting in four of those goals.

“Duford is an all star player and more importantly an all star student,” Hewston said.

“There are nothing but good things to say about the Lady Pirates. They are really meshing and good things are happening.”

The Lady Pirates meet the Columbia Falls Wildkats on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. and travel to take on the Libby Lady Loggers on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Mission Valley Christian Academy

The Mission Valley Christian Academy coed soccer team hosted a

tournament last weekend, leaving them 6-0 on the season, so far. Each game was scheduled for 30-minute halves, not the normal 40-minute halves.

MVCA’s first match against Summit Prep Friday evening was a very physical game but they pulled out a win with a score of 8-4. Saturday’s game against Montana Academy was scoreless and very intense in the first half and then the goals opened up in the second half. The win put MVCA at 2-0 in pool play, giving them the No. 1 seed going into the elimination bracket. Since MVCA was No. 1 seed and MT Academy was the No. 4 seed, after playing them in the first game, they had to turn right around and play them again. It was another fierce first half, but MVCA was able to sneak one goal in just before the halftime whistle and then ended the game with a solid defensive effort to preserve the shutout.

In the second semi-final game, Summit Prep beat Thompson Falls setting up a rematch between MVCA and Summit Prep in the championship game. MVCA beat the No. 2 seed Summit Prep, 7-2 in this game. Summit had played a very physical game against them the day before and MVCA players expected Summit to come out and pressure them hard, but MVCA was able to counter their attack and get some goals early and that put Summit on their heels for the rest of the game. Summit Prep were the tournament champions last year and MVCA felt good beating them in the championship game this year.
