DIXON – We’re into autumn and the delights it can bring...the much more enjoyable weather (I grew up in the rain and drips of the Northwest), the trees are turning colors, most of the harvesting is done and now the apples abound. Don’t you love the predictability of the changes? The geese are deliriously honking (how do they decide when to change leaders in the formation?) and many flowers, which didn’t seem to thrive this summer, have awakened to brighten the spaces once more before they are gone for good. Halloween, and shortly Thanksgiving decorations will be all around, reminding us of delicious, seasonal treats and activities. I will remind myself, in the depths of winter, how I hope the cold will prevent the infestations of earwigs (and other pests), which ruined my pest-fighting marigolds. This is a great time to renew our visits to the senior centers and meet up with friends and enjoy good hearty fare.

Weren’t the Dixon melons wonderful again this year? The season started early and I still have a couple in my refrigerator. Seven bears at a time were seen in one of the melon fields nearby, enjoying their feast. This is the first time in fifteen years that I’ve seen a “resident” black bear in my yard and neighborhood chomping apples, blackberries, mushrooms and climbing up a tree right in the midst of our houses. He’s been hanging around for over a week, not doing any damage, but I don’t go out at night.

We have been so fortunate to have talented cooks available to fill in as needed. Diane Groh has been back, while Jen Hammond was on leave with her new daughter. Vic Charlo has been smiling enjoying his new grandson, Chief, and noting: “babies take a lot of time!” This is a good reminder that all ages are welcome at our center. Lunch is on Thursdays at noon and dinner is at 6 p.m. on Mondays. We even have a highchair available for our littlest guests.

Meals for the next couple of weeks:

—  Thursday, Oct. 1: Polish sausage and sauerkraut

—  Monday, Oct. 5: chicken stir-fry

—  Thursday, Oct. 8:  Denver scramble, pancakes and bacon

—  Monday, Oct. 12: beef and bean enchiladas

—  Thursday, Oct. 15: roast pork

All meals have breads, fruits, vegetables and desserts. Take outs are available. Let someone else do the cooking and clean up! We very much enjoy and appreciate the garden produce and fruit  to enjoy with our meals! Thanks for sharing.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, there will be an opportunity to get a flu shot at our center. Hours are from 10-12, and you might as well stay for lunch. Bring your Social Security card if you have one. There are already cases of the flu in our area.
