RONAN — The Polson High School Speech-Debate team participated at the Chiefs and Maidens Invitational Speech, Debate, and Drama Tournament in Ronan on Saturday, Nov. 7, against 10 schools from the region, including teams from all four classes — AA, A, B, C.
Polson High School has two new coaches this year: Assistant Speech Coach Dale Hannon and Assistant Debate Coach Kyle Dunn.
Kenyon Cairns earned second place in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate and Annabelle Smith and Katelyn Toland took second in Policy Debate.
“I’m really proud of our debaters. We had a rough tournament in Kalispell last week, but they worked hard in practice, fixed some problems, got themselves better organized, and it really showed,” Coach Jon Petersen said. “It is a testimony to coach Kyle Dunn that the kids made such an improvement so quickly.”
Jordan Croft finished Humorous Oral Interpretation in seventh place.
“I’m glad to have Jordan Croft back on the team,” Petersen said. “We haven’t had a competitor earn a medal in Humorous Interpretation in a long time, so I’m really pleased with her performance.”
When the day was done, the Polson Pirate team took home bronze for Class A.
“Overall, our team is pretty young, with a lot of new competitors. In particular, we have several cross-country kids who just joined the team in the last week,” Petersen said. “But I think there is a core of good, young talent that will grow during the season.”
Polson’s next meet will be held in Corvallis on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13-14.
