DIXON — It’s 50+ degrees as I type this on Friday...near Dixon, which is known as the “banana belt” of these parts. I am tempted to pick the “last rose of autumn”— a deep red bud, which probably won’t last to bloom. Petunias are hanging in there, as well as a few marigolds. The stellar Jays and two magpies take turns eating from the suet block intended for a downy woodpecker, and multitudes of little brown birds are feasting on sunflower seeds. This all makes for fine entertainment for a retiree during the coming winter.

Our senior center was the location for a meeting of several state agencies interested in doing a Sanders County Community Assessment of strengths, weaknesses, future wishes, etc. and audience members were encouraged to speak their piece. There will be another meeting next year to present the compilation from county communities. Watch for the date and come if you can. Some of our strengths were mentioned: the good people in our area, beautiful scenery, weather and the cost of living.

The Senior Center in Dixon is in need of more good people to join in to keep us going. We have delicious meals and all ages are invited to come at 5 p.m. on Monday nights and at lunchtime at noon on Thursdays. Bring your families, friends and guests. Meals are only $4 for adults and you may take-out for $4. We also have a highchair. With a larger membership we would be able to have more activities and services. Dues are only $5 a year. Please consider this.

Meals for the rest of November:

—  Thursday, Nov. 19: Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings

—  Monday, Nov. 23: tilapia (fish), home fries

—  Thursday, Nov. 26: There will be no meal on Thanksgiving

—  Monday, Nov. 30: roast pork

—  Meals also include fruit, vegetables, bread, and dessert.

If you travel along Montana Highway 200 (from Ravalli, through Dixon, to Sandpoint, Idaho, notice it is an official National Scenic Highway. The Jocko River flows into the Flathead River at Dixon, continues to the Clark Fork River at Paradise, then into Lake Pend d’Oreille at Sandpoint, Idaho. This is one way to avoid Lookout Pass and see some lovely scenery.

Count your blessings. We all have some.
