CORALLIS — The Polson High School Speech-Debate team placed sixth at the Corvallis Invitational Speech, Debate, and Drama Tournament in Corvallis on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13-14.
Fourteen schools from western Montana participated at the meet, including teams from as far away as Bozeman and Sweet Grass.
Kenyon Cairns took home gold in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate.
“Kenyon’s win doesn’t surprise me in the least,” Debate Coach Kyle Dunn said. “He can engage you in an argument, and leave you arriving at only one possible conclusion — his.”
Three team members made it to the semi-final round, including Geneva des Lions (Impromptu), Ghanima des Lions (Original Oratory), and Tessa Nunlist (Extemperaneous Speaking).
Speech/Debate Head Coach Jon Petersen said he was particularly proud of Nunlist for making it to the semi-finals.
“This was the first meet for several of our kids,” Petersen said. “Now that they have a better idea of what the experienced competitors can do, I think they’ll be able to make significant progress heading into our next tournament.”
Polson’s next meet is on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-21 in Kalispell.
