ST. IGNATIUS – The Mission Catholic Church held a concert to raise money to help save the crumbling murals on Saturday, Dec 12.

“We are trying everything we can,” said Nancy Plant, Mission Church secretary.

The Treasure State Chorale traveled from Missoula to donate their time to help save the murals with their “Sounds of the Season” concert. They sang several holiday songs from “Welcome the Holidays” to “I heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” Donations were taken at the door.

“We raised about $3,000,” Plant said of the event.

The church needs about $50,000 to fix the crumbling murals. The exact cost is still being calculated. The murals inside the historic church cracked with pieces falling down after repair work was done to help stabilize the structure of the church earlier this year. If repairs aren’t done, Father Andrew L. Maddock predicts that the murals will crumble.

The church hopes to hire EverGreene Architectural Arts to restore the murals, but first, the church needs to raise enough money for the project. The mural restoration company travels the country restoring historic sites. The project involves lifting portions of the murals from the wall and replacing them where the walls have distended. The cracks need to be filled and repainted.

The church has also collected money from private donations. They’ve raised $6,690 on their Gofundme website located at www.gofundme.com/StIgnatius-Mission.

“We are trying everything we can to raise the money,” she said. “And we still have a ways to go.”
